Reading on the Aura H2O is virtually the same experience as reading on the Aura HD, which is a very good thing. And unlike the Aura HD, which had some issues with inconsistent touch response, the H2O was perfectly accurate in my tests, no matter which interface elements I was trying to tap. Reading, Kobo Store, and Apps The Aura H2O is powered by a 1GHz processor, which makes for speedy page turns. In addition to being much easier to read outside, it's one of the primary reasons to opt for an ebook reader instead. This will depend on how much you use edge lighting, but it's still significantly better performance than you'll find on any color tablet. The company claims the Aura H2O is good for up to two months of reading 30 minutes per day on a single charge. Kobo's cloud-based storage is similar to that from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as all of your purchases are stored there and can be synced among most computers and mobile devices, thanks to the Kobo apps available for most platforms. And Kobo supports many more file types than Amazon, which makes the additional storage all the more welcome (I'll touch more on file support in the next section). That means you don't need to worry about storing large PDF files or documents with a lot of images. There's also the aforementioned microSD card slot that works with cards up to 32GB. You get 4GB of storage, which is good for up to 3,000 books, according to Kobo. Compared with the Kindle Paperwhite, the Aura H2O gets considerably brighter even at lower settings, the Kobo manages to put out more light than the Paperwhite, which helps make text more readable. Lighting, Storage, and Battery LifeKobo's ComfortLight remains the best edge lighting I've seen on an E Ink device. The reader can automatically sense if there's water on the screen, and will display a message to let you know. I immersed the H2O in sink full of water, then dried it off and it worked just fine. The Aura H2O is IP67 certified, which means that it remains waterproof up to 30 minutes in three feet of water as long as the port on the bottom is closed. The most important design aspect about the Aura H2O, however, is that it's one of the first ebook readers with a waterproof (as well as dustproof) build. Keep in mind the display is also nearly an inch larger, which helps explain some of the added bulk. Positioned side by side, text looks noticeably cleaner than on the Paperwhite, which measures in at 212ppi. The reader's 6.8-inch screen features 1,430-by-1,080 pixels, which works out to 265ppi. It uses the latest Carta E Ink HD panel, which makes it sharper than the Kindle Paperwhite. Also in the box you'll find a brief manual, a USB cable (though no AC adapter), and a microfiber-like cloth Kobo says should be used to dry the tablet. These ports are covered, and must remain so in order for the reader to be waterproof. The bottom panel is home to a micro USB charging port, as well as a microSD card slot. Edge lighting is activated on the display this time around, rather than a dedicated button. There is just one physical switch on the Aura H2O, in the form of a Power button on the top right edge. The Aura H2O is covered in a grippy, rubberized plastic, and has a more solid feel to it than the Aura HD. But it still feels bulky compared with the Kindle Paperwhite, which is a little thinner and weighs nearly an ounce less. That said, the Aura H2O is thinner than the 0.46-inch Aura HD, and at 8.2 ounces, it weighs less, which makes it slightly more comfortable to hold. It's also slightly larger than the Aura HD overall, at 7.04 by 5.07 by 0.38 inches (HWD). For starters, the Aura H2O only comes in black (the Aura HD is also available in brown or white). But if you like to read poolside, the Aura H2O is sure to make you happy.ĭesign and Waterproofing At a glance, it's easy to mistake the Aura H2O for the Aura HD, though there are a few small differences. For $179.99, the Aura H2O is a good deal more expensive than the Kindle Paperwhite from Amazon, and its overall ecosystem isn't as impressive. The new Kobo Aura H2O is in many ways the same device as last year's excellent Aura HD, but with one very important change: The Aura H2O is waterproof, so you can read worry-free while in the tub or at the beach. Kobo is taking the ebook reader somewhere it's never been before: Your bathtub. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
